Why does pencil appears to be bent when placed in water?

Ans: In childhood we try to immerse part of pencil in water to see that it is bent. But never thought of why it appears bent when placed in water. We just enjoy to do this. But today let’s know that why pencil appears bent while immersed in water!
A pencil immersed in water appears too bent due to refraction of lightBefore going forward let’s understand this term.
First, what is refraction? Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where its speed is different. Now theRefraction of light means when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media.
Now the answer is refraction causes apparent shift in the position of the part of pencil immersed in water.
